This post is sponsored by Aqua-Tots, but as always, all opinions are my own.
As a new year has begun, we’ve all set our yearly resolutions, or goals as we like to refer to them here in this house. I even have asked the boys to set a few goals for the year. As I set my own goals for the year, I thought it’d be fun to sit down and ask them to set some too! It’s important to set a few goals so that we can always be striving toward something. Whether we actually reach our goals isn’t as important. It’s simply the
One goal the boys were adamant about was staying in swim class. Great! But I suggested that we could expand on that and add moving up a couple levels this year and work on their underwater skills.
They’ve been taking swim lessons at Aqua-Tots in Canton for a couple months now. To say they love it is quite an understatement. Their level of excitement for Thursdays (our regular weekly lesson day) is off the charts. They wake up asking how much longer until we can go to Aqua-Tots.
In order to reach their goal, I thought we could add in an extra weekly lesson because as the old saying goes, “practice makes perfect”! There are so many studies out there that have been done on muscle memory, how extra practice in performance based skills (like swimming) will increase your skill level dramatically and enhance your ability to hone in on the intricate parts of swimming (endurance, technique, speed, etc.), not to mention that swimming is a LIFE LESSON. This isn’t just a sport that will be played during childhood and then forgotten. It’s a treasured skill for LIFE and is so very important.
The experts at Aqua-Tots recommend enrolling into their swim program multiple days a week. Being with their swim instructor multiple days a week will increase their muscle memory for those harder to reach skills (in our case it’s underwater comfortability and learning new strokes), and will promote their progression incredibly.
Not only is it helpful to enroll for program multiple times a week to enhance skills, but it’s more exercise! I’m sure you’re well aware of the childhood obesity epidemic in this country. And if not, now you know. According to this recent study 18.5% of children 2-5 years old are obese. And those stats only increase as children get older. It’s scary y’all.
We do our best to model a healthy and active lifestyle. So it’s helpful and beneficial when the boys having the ability to be in Aqua-Tots swim program multiple times a week. It gets them up and moving so they aren’t tempted to be glued to the couch or the screen.
And while we’re talking screen time…. another study found here says that children under 9 years old are spending upwards of 2+ hours a day on a screen whether it’s a phone, tablet, computer or TV. And again, those stats only get higher and higher as you get into the older ages of children. As a parent of young children I am determined to break the mold and change the tide back to how it used to be. And in an effort to do that we make sure our children are getting an adequate amount of exercise daily / weekly which is where Aqua-Tots comes in.
