HAPPY NEW YEAR! I cannot believe we are already into 2018! But let me tell you… it definitely FEELS like we’re in January with these bitter temperatures lately.
As Michiganders, we’re pretty accustomed to cold temps and we aren’t ones to let the winter months stop us or keep us home bound. We actually really love winter (minus having to wear 15 layers)! The snowman building, the sledding, the winter walks — we love it. But as winter comes, so does all the other symptoms of winter — sickness, dry skin and inevitably being indoors more than we’d prefer. So it’s essential for me as a stay-at-home-parent to figure out how to keep my sanity and these kids happy and healthy during the long winter here.
Now with three kids at three different ages, it’s been a little more challenging to entertain all of them at once and keep them healthy, but I think I’ve got a handful of ideas on how to get through it.
I wanted to share a few of my go-to’s for how to get through the winter unscathed from indoor activities to skincare hacks since we are now in the very thick of this negative degree season and still have several months before we can get out in the sunshine!
Simple Ways to Stay Sane + Rehydrate This Winter
Books, puzzles, Legos and simple board games are a must have. And truthfully, they’ve been our best friends as of late. With the kids being on winter break from school and not being able to go outside, we’ve had to rely on lots of indoor activities to keep us occupied. We’ve even been skipping the gym because I just can’t bear to take them out in the negative degree weather unless I absolutely have to.
Keep Your Skin Hydrated
We keep our Lubriderm unscented lotion on standby. We use it regularly and all day long to battle the winter dryness. Between the coldness and the heat running inside your home it’s so easy to get dry, cracked skin. Lubriderm is the only way I know how to battle it and keep it at bay.
Lubriderm is packed with skin essential moisturizers naturally found in healthy skin and forms them into a lightweight, non-greasy everyday lotion that your family will love.
My kids have very sensitive skin as it is, and the winter months make it dramatically worse. Thankfully, Lubriderm has saved us and keep us hydrated throughout the dry, winter months. We especially make sure to lotion up after every bath and shower when your skin is a little damp still so it will absorb the lotion fully.
I pick up our Lubriderm at Walmart and right now they have a Rollback going and I got a giant bottle for under $6! (prices vary depending on which product you purchase) Find it here >>> Lubriderm at Walmart
Freezer Soup Prep
During the winter I prep and freeze chicken noodle soup (broth) and have it on hand for these long winter months when sickness is prevalent. I learned it from a friend who would drop some off when I was sick, and have since then adopted the idea into my own household. It’s super handy to have some chicken soup in the freezer that you can pop into a pot and have homemade goodness for when you or someone in your family isn’t feeling 100%. Here’s my favorite chicken soup recipe to try out too!
There’s a few ways you can prevent skin dryness. We run a humidifier regularly during the winter. It really helps a lot! I also make sure that everyone gets Lubriderm after every bath, gets petroleum jelly on lips to prevent cracking and healing ointment on skin areas that are exposed to the elements regularly (hands and face mostly).
Daily Vitamins + Exercise
So many people get seasonal depression during this time and it is imperative to make sure you are getting your daily vitamins in and staying active! Trust me, I totally get that it is hard to get motivated to move your body when it is FREEZING outside. But the exercise and daily activity will help keep your mood lifted and your blood flowing. Daily activity helps to ward off that seasonal depression thanks to the endorphins you get from breaking a sweat.
