This month I want to take time to celebrate and continue to bring awareness to something so close to my heart and to my family – adoption.
November is National Adoption Awareness Month.
It’s been just over two years since we have been an official adoptive family. And let me tell you friends — there is nothing sweeter. But it does come with it’s challenges. We’re currently in the stage of working to explain what adoption means and how that makes our son different, special and so unique.
Something that is so important to us as a family is continually discussing adoption and the role it has in our family. Our oldest son is adopted and we make every effort to maintain a fine balance of making sure he feels no different than our other children, yet feels special and unique. One way we do this is celebrating Gotcha Day every year. But that’s just once a year.
How can you make your adoptive children feel special and understand what being adopted means? One simple way we do this is by reading! There are so many resources out there for parents and children alike, but today I want to focus on books for adopted children that can help to explain to them what it means to be adopted and how they have played an integral role in creating your family.
Our adoption story isn’t the norm, which makes it a little harder for us, however, there are still a lot of story lines that can be related to our son’s adoption story. Every child’s story is original to them, so do your best to take a story and make it your own! These books are the perfect opportunity to naturally bring adoption into the conversation and peak your child’s interest. They will soon start asking questions and become interested in learning more about THEIR story.
Here are a few of our favorite adoption children’s books!
Favorite Children’s Books for Adoption
This is by far our favorite book! It’s story of a young fox asking his mother where he came from and mama fox telling him her favorite story about how “God Found Us You”. Like I mentioned above, you really want to read the story and break it down to how it applies to YOU in particular. Even though this isn’t 100% tried and true to our adoption story, it’s still a great book for little listeners.
An adorable tale about a young girl inquiring about the same story she knows by heart, but loves to hear. This book talks about the great importance a family plays in a child’s life and how adoption can make a family forever.
This is a new one for us in our home, but we already love it! Choco sets out to find his mother and finds a forever family in Mrs. Bear’s home where all of her children come from different backgrounds. This book really hits home with how different dynamics can make a family great and bond even more!
This is a great book for elementary aged kids and those who lived in a foster home(s) before being adopted. It’s a heartwarming story for nontraditional families where a puppy goes to live with his new mom and even though he was nervous at first quickly realizes that his new mom does all the same things other parents do! We’re saving this one for when our son gets a little older.
This is a great option for international adoptions, however, even if your child wasn’t an international adoption I firmly believe you can shape every story to fit into your own family! This is a story of a young panda who dreams of his “furever” family. It’s a great story of seeing past physical differences and is beautifully illustrated.
I really hope you enjoy these books and can make them a part of your family’s reading time. We have enjoyed them SO MUCH and believe they are really helping to explain adoption and the amazing role it has played in creating our forever family.
