As a mother in any walk of your parenting journey it is SO CRUCIAL to do some simple acts of self care. No matter if you’re a working mom or a stay-at-home-mom or anywhere in the middle the fact remains that you spend a majority of your days caring for your children. Some moms are tending to keeping small children fed, alive and entertained 24/7 (I know it’s hard to believe this is tiresome, but it really is!). While other moms are putting in 40 hours a week at a full-time job (KUDOS to all the working moms!), trekking kids to and from sports practice, keeping up with the never-ending homework and hearing out friend drama.
Our days seem endless at times. There is always something to do. Laundry. Dinner. Bathroom needs cleaned. The diaper needs changed. He needs a new pair of shoes. The baby needs to be fed. The list goes on and on.
These tasks can get mundane and tiresome if we’re not recharging our batteries in some way. We need to consistently be stepping away from the responsibilities (even though we love them!) and taking time to care for ourselves. We can only become better mothers if we’re taking some time to put effort into ourselves and how we feel on a daily basis.
Five Acts of Self Care for Every Mom
I know, I know. Read a book? But really, reading is one of my favorite acts of self care. It’s a way I can escape the mundane and enter an entire different world. And it doesn’t have to be a book per say, but reading in general. Sometimes just taking 20-30 minutes every day to read something that doesn’t rhyme or say “Brown Bear” on it will help work those brain muscles and get you to relax. My personal favorites to read are thriller genres in the fiction section of the library, but I also love to read fellow bloggers posts about their lives and their motherhood journey. I’m fascinated by the lives other people live and enjoy taking some time to read about them.
Enjoy a Glass of Wine
Enjoy a glass of wine… or your favorite beverage! Coffee, wine, a mocktail… anything to help you unwind from the day. I’d say I more often than not grab a cup of English Breakfast tea to end my nights, but every so often I’ll pour a glass of wine and veg out with my book. There is nothing like taking off my mom hat, sipping on a glass of my favorite vino and entering into another reality.
Take 20 minutes to paint your nails, do a face mask, give yourself a pedicure…. anything! The possibilities are endless. I love throwing on a face mask from Posh and sitting down to give myself a home manicure. It’s a simple way I can care for myself, my skin and my appearance because it makes ME feel good.
This is one of my personal favorites. Staying active lets me spend an entire HOUR to myself.
Headphones in, world off.
I get a chance to recharge my batteries, turn my music up and get a good sweat in. I always leave a workout feeling refreshed, energized and ready to take on whatever comes my way (like a poop explosion or toddler meltdown!).
Spend Time With Your Tribe
Take a weekend away with some girlfriends, plan a coffee date with your best friend, do a Saturday morning breakfast with your gal pals (my personal favorite here!). There are so many times we use motherhood as a way to get out of spending time with our friends. But honestly? It’s only after I spend some time with my friends that I go back to my mom life and think “Wow, I’m not alone in this!” They encourage you and support you in all of life’s up and downs. They are the reason I never, ever feel like I’m the only one experiencing the hard times we face in motherhood. Your mom tribe will back you up and remind you why you do what you do.
These are just a few simple ways you can practice some self care. We all need it in order to be better moms and better women!
